It turns out that the problem was the 3 second timeout we use in uDig. I had logging turned on in Geoserver and so it took longer than 3 seconds to answer a request. Perhaps we should also increase the timeout.
I am looking at the code.... At a glance it looks good to me. Definitely like the name change.
