Okay I need to give this error a name; the good news is I can now reproduce it in a Windows XP VM. Thus far I have only seen it on Windows XP. Earlier testing on Windows 7 seemed okay (indeed that is how I updated walkthrough 1 and walkthrough 2 so I am not sure what is up ...).
The error shows up when any layer you add to the map; shows up as "new Layer". It looks like shapefile resource cannot resolve to a DataStore; and thus the code that would normally determine layer name; default style and so on does not get a chance to function. -- Jody Garnett
