Evening Cliff: 

Part of you getting commit access is making sure you are not held up by the 
pull request process; especially when doing incremental development like this.
As for testing the SDK; the export page you found did document what is needed 
(basically the SDK Quickstart followed by  the Custom App Tutorial).

You *can* cheat by setting up a workspace with the SDK as your target platform; 
and just importing the two tutorials
mentioned above and trying to run them and then export the Custom app.

Q: what is the version of eclipse should I use to test?
Q: what profile do I need to run to make the SDK?
