You can ask on the imageio-ext list; as far as I know if the format is listed 
it should function.
If you want we could maintain list of formats that have failed our own QA and 
restrict them from
that list .. but it would be kind to offer a bug report.

The best list is one generated at the time from the generated list of "formats" 
provided by GeoTools.
Many of these formats are not popular and you would have difficulty finding 
sample data to test with.

That is great!

After uDig 1.3.2 is out we should go through these steps with a more modern 
version of Java-> the latest Java 6 is 1.6.0_35 right now. And we can consider 
Java 7.
