Hi Bob There are OS-Distributions which cover some special functionality very well:
> Opensolaris is not a Phone OS like: > http://www.digantel.org/ > > Opensolaris is not a Storage OS like: > EONSTORAGE http://eonstorage.blogspot.com/ > > Opensolaris is no Firewall OS like: > http://m0n0.ch/wall/ > > Opensolaris is no SystemRescue OS like: > http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page The things they all have in common is the fact, that they just work (like Apple used to do) out of the box. We don't have to provide just a good OS like many other OS' died in the past. To be successful means to reach normal Users not Techies,Developers and Nirds. Have a look at ubuntu - they provide as an example closed source drivers to cover more systems. But the main Problem are Applications like MS Office and Adobe CS3 as defakto-Standard which used to be used by so many people. They don't like to learn all the time to switch over to another Tool just to do the same thing in another way. Productivity depends on two things - the Tool and MASTERING the Tool. > I think Opensolaris is the best Desktop OS > and I do not understand > why e.g. the Rankin in Google.com is still so low: > Opensolaris: 4,140,000 Pages > OpenBSD 4,340,000 Pages > FreeBSD 19,300,000 Pages > Linux 287,000,000 Pages Most of People (even IT-People) don't even know that a Server-OS (in the Past) do Desktop-Computing so well. Just give them more time to discover the new world. > What is missing in this OS beside all the missing Drivers? Just Plug an Play funktionality of Internet-Access-Cards (PCi-Express, USB) and Applications. Cheers G?rald
