Thanks to Dan Gangaiya who pointed me at Sun Doc 216944 which gives a similar story of woe[1] but I'd already tried deleting all entries from /etc/lutab and it hadn't solved my issue ... In the end I deleted /etc/lutab and the /etc/lu directory and re-installed the LU packages SUNWlucfg, SUNWlur and SUNWluu to recreate a blank state in /etc/lu and /etc/lutab which seems to have done the trick ...
