I have done this many times myself and not gotten LU into these sort of knots ... in this case I think it may have been someone who was unfamiliar with both SVM and LU and the added complication of a dodgy disk at the wrong time in an upgrade procedure ... annoyingly I don't have complete logs to see where exactly things came off the rails ...
