Ex-ministers Matembe, Kiyingi also join

KAMPALA — Leading Movement politicians opposed to the ‘third term’ yesterday joined ranks with the Parliamentary Advocacy Forum (PAFO).

The so-called ‘Malwa Group’ also finally named its interim leaders.

Ruhama County MP Augustine Ruzindana was elected as chairman, at an extraordinary meeting at Parliament.

The group is opposed to the removal of the presidential term limit to allow Mr Yoweri Museveni run for another term in 2006. The president’s last constitutional term expires in 2006.

Ms Salaamu Musumba (Bugabula South), who is the spokesperson of the new organisation, told The Monitor that they are toying with the idea of forming a new party.

Musumba said that the new group plans to work with some of the existing parties.

“The new group has no intention of ruining existing parties,” she said.
“The Malwa Group has moved from the interim stage arrangement where it was largely maligned. Some people wished the group death,” she said.

She said that the group would now work towards the national cause of constitutionalism and good governance.

On Ruzindana being elected as the chairperson, Musumba said that people are comfortable working with the former IGG.

“We hope to benefit from him as a legislator, elder and a revolutionist,” she said.

The organisation elected 23 members on its cabinet including former ministers; Ms Sarah Kiyingi (State for Internal Affairs) and Ms Miria Matembe (State for Ethics and Integrity).
