President Yoweri Museveni has received an award from a leading American institute on behalf of Ugandans in recognition for their fight against HIV/Aids and poverty.

The African-American Institute gave the award to Mr Museveni on Wednesday evening at a dinner hosted by the institute at the UN headquarters in New York while marking 50 years of existence.

The Institute hailed Uganda's dramatic reduction of the HIV/Aids rate from 18 percent to 5 percent in less than 10 years owing to vigorous public education campaigns spearheaded by the President.

The AAI African National Achievement Award was also bestowed on Kenya at the ceremony for its crusade against corruption.

While receiving the award, Museveni expressed happiness with the Institute and applauded its work.

He congratulated the Institute on its 50th anniversary and said that Uganda is ready to work

with it in future as manifested in the last 17 years.

Museveni called upon on the Institute to enhance Africa's contacts with the United States especially in trade and investment.

The President described the African Growth and Opportunity Act arrangement as the first act of great solidarity between the western world and Africa in the last 500 years.

Dr Fred Wabwire-Mangeni, the director of the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University, received the AAI Distinguished Alumni Award for his role in the country's battle against Aids.

Kenyan Dr Mariam Were was awarded for being one of the world's leading research scientists in public health with expertise in prevention and control of HIV/Aids.

Other speakers at the award dinner included Mr Andrew Young, the former US permanent representative to the United Nations, and the chairman of the board as well as the chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc., Mr Henry Mckinnell. - PPU
