TOP REPRESENTATIVE OF GOVERNMENT PARTY KILLED
Politics/Economy, Brief

A top representative of the government PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) was shot dead in south Nigeria. Police sources referred that Amino-Sari Dikibo, one of the national vice-presidents of the PDP, was killed on Saturday night by some unidentified gunmen on his way to Asaba, capital of the Delta State, where he was due to attend a meeting. According to police, Dikibo was shot in the head in still unconfirmed circumstances, as well as motives, which maybe the other two people travelling in the car with him can clarify. In the past years Nigeria has been theatre to repeated cases of violence against politicians: one of the most significant in March 2003, on the eve of general elections, when Harry Marshall, vice-president of the main opposition ANPP (All Nigeria Peoples Party), was killed in him home.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
