KAMPALA - Ugandans should not miss again the opportunity to put the country on the path to peace and stability, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) chief, Dr. Kizza Besigye has said.
For 42 years, no leader has ever handed over power peacefully to another elected leader. The silver lining is that presently, there is another opportunity to place our country onto a path of democracy, stability and socio-economic progress, he said in the independence day message sent from South Africa. If we fail to seize it, history will judge our generation harshly and the country will pay dearly, he warned.
Besigye said the historical challenge facing our country today remains the way it was in 1962, that of making a transition to a democratic dispensation that would foster social-economic progress for the benefit of all Ugandans. The clouds of wars, poverty, disease, hunger, abuse of human rights and freedom
s,
unprecedented corruption, election violence, and violation of the Constititution continue to intensify over our country, the statement said. He called upon Ugandans to rededicate themselves to ensuring a successful democratic transition.
