Lord's Resistance Army rebels in Uganda are suspected to have carried out two attacks killing at least 10 people.

The attacks in the north have led to calls for more troops to be deployed to protect the civilians.

More than one million people have been displaced during the 19 year-conflict. On Tuesday a limited ceasefire granted by the Ugandan government expired.

An Apac district MP said six women and two children were clubbed and hacked to death in a camp for displaced people.

Talks fear

Betty Amongi says the rebels then moved a few kilometres south of Anomolyet camp and killed two more people in Aringodyang.

The Ugandan army has confirmed that the LRA rebels carried out the attacks which took place in the middle of Tuesday night.

Ugandan army spokesman Major Shaban Banatariza promised to investigate the strength of troop deployments in the Apac area and admitted that there have been problems with the funding of an allied militia - the Amuka.

Meanwhile, less than 10 kilometres from Gulu town three civilians were killed by LRA rebels on Monday night.

Major Banatariza said a group of rebels was pursued and eight LRA members killed since it attacked.

Major Banatariza said the LRA's strength was constantly being eroded and stated that while peace talks and the military option were both being pursued, the only method to yield results was the military.

A former minister working as a mediator, Betty Bigombe, said she was very disappointed that the ceasefire was not extended but added that she was still in touch with the rebels.

She also warned that if as is expected the International Criminal Court based in the Hague issues arrest warrants for senior rebel commanders, she will call the whole peace process off.
