AFRICA DAY in Africa and the African Diaspora is a commemoration and celebration of the struggles of African liberation and reunification culminating in the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now African Union, on May 25, 1963. The contemporary vision for the AU was first advocated by 19th century leaders like Rev. Dr. Edward Blyden, Rev. Henry H. Garnet, Bishop Henry McNeil Turner, Bishop Alexander Crummel and Sylvester Williams It was given substance by 20th century leaders like WEB Dubois, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Jomo Kenyatta, Amy Jacques Garvey, George Padmore, Haile Selassie, Sekou Toure, Julius Nyrere, Nandi Azikwe, Patrice Lumumba, etc. for an African government responsible for the protection, preservation and promotion of African people, EVERYWHERE. The RHAW is urging the African Diaspora faith leaders to commit to work as partners with African leaders, especially those of pan African faith organizations like the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) in Kenya, to restore and rebuild African communities throughout the world.
