What THE NATION news paper is calling for below,is peharps prompted by the stake which the Agha Khan media group ( the true owners of THE NATION  and THE MONITOR) have in ensuring that Uganda is "stable" so that they may continue making money. The fact, however, is that Museveni's NRM  is not going to drop treason and terrorism charges against Bwesigye period. Indeed, if Museveni was to drop charges against Bwesigye, how about the 22 others remanded on fictitious charge of treason  and will be tried by the MIlitary Court Marshall?

Fair editorial though by THE NATION News Paper. I am however, affraid that what you are calling for, cannot happen. Museveni is now in it too Deep!!!

Drop Suits Against Besigye

Nairobi
Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been enjoying some reprieve from the courts since the elections ended last month.
A Ugandan judge early this week cleared him of rape charges, and strongly criticised the charge as abuse of court process.
This vindicates Dr Besigye and gives credence to his claim that his incarceration and subsequent charging before the elections was meant to undermine his candidature in the presidential contest.
It is equally reassuring that President Museveni has given his word that his former physician will not be court-martialled to face charges of terrorism and illegal possession of firearm that are still pending.
Dr Besigye has maintained that these, too, are trumped-up charges that were meant to distract him and his supporters in the elections.
But Museveni's commitment to the US an d the European Union that Dr Besigye will face a civilian court does not guarantee justice. If the charges are false, then the appropriate thing would be to drop them altogether.
There is convincing evidence that Dr Besigye's tribulations arose from his political activities. His arrest soon after stepping on Ugandan soil after four years in exile in South African triggered social unrest, in which one person was killed.
Since the elections are over, President Museveni should extend an olive branch and drop those charges as one of the ways of healing the country.

If Dr Besigye is the outlaw that Kampala has painted him to be, could it be that the many people who voted for him in the recent elections do not really know him?
To defuse possible tensions that his trial could generate, Kampala should unconditionally drop the charges and grant Dr Besigye his citizenship rights.
