Government to roll out home address system

In Summary

The system will ease delivery of goods to premises locally and
internationally.

The Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology is expected to
roll out a nationwide home address marking plan in June to boost e-commerce.

This was revealed by the ICT minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, while launching
the Posta Cash mobile money transaction on Friday.

Dr Rugunda said the government was undertaking a pilot project to name all
roads and provide house numbers in Entebbe but in June, the process could be
expanded countrywide depending on the results of evaluation.

“This will boost e-commerce because Ugandans will feel free to shop online
and receive their goods in the comfort of their homes,” Dr Rugunda said.

Many parts of the country lack address systems for houses and plot numbers
because there is no policy to ensure they are established.

This hinders effective execution of security measures and delivery of goods
in the country.

Dr Rugunda said the government had taken long to roll out the system due to
development process.

“But you know even when a woman is to give birth, there is a period of
conception, carrying a baby and giving birth. We are nearly giving birth,”
he said.

The minister, however, declined to specify how much the project is expected
to cost.

He, however, urged Posta Uganda to provide the necessary equipment so that
it plays a key role by becoming the courier choice for the country.

Mr Charles Lubwama, a trader in Kikuubo, said the initiative would help
many, who send people home to deliver merchandise from the markets.

“You may have a home but you have no idea of how to direct some one to your
house apart from referring them to the colours of the houses nearby,” Mr
Lubwama said.
