Hi All,

We’re in the market for a handful of field testers for testing L2 and L3 access
circuits across our network. Does anyone have wisdom they can impart? We
ideally need three or four out in the field, with the remote endpoint being
either a static test-head in one of our core PoPs, or alternatively an
additional tester at our office. Not sure if a static remote test-head makes
the whole solution much more expensive?

The aim of this is to provide some reasonably straightforward way of our field
engineers doing turn-up connectivity performance measurements (latency,
throughput etc). The devices need to be capable of taking multiple SFPs so we
can deal with various fibre types (including BiDi and WDM optics) as well as
copper.

10G isn’t as important, because the CPE we’re using (ADVA XG210) can do
end-to-end throughput testing. Having said that if we found the cost of 10G
testers wasn’t massively more expensive, we might elect for one of the testers
to be 10G capable.

Assume zero knowledge - the only experience we have with this sort of thing is
with our lovely Exfo OTDR/iOLM unit and have had a wee play with a Fluke once
upon a time. Any advice would be appreciated. Introductions to decent
salespeople also welcome (offlist).

Thanks

C
