19 Nov. 1915 Death of Captain R. J. O'LONE

This morning’s casualty list contains the name of Captain Robert J.
O'LONE, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, who was mortally wounded
last Friday while engaged on reconnoitring duty. Captain O'LONE was
shot in the stomach, and died in a few minutes, his remains being laid
to rest by his comrades. Deceased was the third son of
Quartermaster-Sergeant John O’LONE, of Victoria Barracks, Belfast, and
Loughries, Newtownards, who, despite his 73 years, rejoined on the
outbreak of war, and has since been serving at the depot of the
Rifles, his old regiment. Captain O’LONE was born in Belfast, and
enlisted at the age of eighteen, spending the whole of his fourteen
years’ service with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, which he
accompanied to the front from Tidworth in August, 1914, when he was
quartermaster-sergeant. Amongst those who went out in the same
regiment was his brother, Captain (then Sergeant) Walter P. O’LONE,
who afterwards won the D.C.M. and a commission, and has been wounded
and missing since the engagement at Hooge between 25th and 27th
September.
