Subject: Security Related Changes to OIT Systems
To: "UM Campus Community":;

Dear Campus Community,

In an effort to reduce the risk of system compromise and disclosure of
personal information, the Office of Information Technology will be
making security related changes to a number of our public systems in
the near future. These changes will reduce the likelihood that a
network eavesdropper will be able to obtain passwords and other data
from you when you utilize the network.

Effective on August 1, 2005, the public access servers for the WAM,
Glue, and DEANS Systems will no longer accept connections that utilize
the insecure TELNET or FTP protocols. WAM, Glue, and DEANS will continue
to be accessible by utilizing encrypted sessions with programs such as
Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure FTP (SFTP).

On October 1, 2005, the e-mail servers for WAM, Glue, DEANS, and [EMAIL
PROTECTED]
will no longer accept unencrypted IMAP or POP connections. This change
will have no effect upon reading mail with a Web browser as that access
already uses encryption.

The OIT Help Desk has developed a Web page that provides more information
on these changes, links for obtaining free SSH/SFTP software, and
instructions for enabling encryption for supported mail programs.
The URL for this page is:

Any questions regarding these changes may be directed to the OIT Help Desk.
The Help Desk is located in room 1400 of the Computer and Space Sciences
Building. The telephone number is 301.405.1500.

Regards,

Gerry Sneeringer
IT Security Officer
