Actually, the best use of telnet I've seen is the way that this site uses it to play back transcripts of Kevin Mitnick's sessions when they busted his ass ;-) http://www.takedown.com/evidence/transcripts/index.html Basically, they have you telnet to a port, and you can watch his entire screen captures.
