Hey Chris, Are you sure gnome is installed on those boxen? Do you start your X session from a command line or log in from a display manager? I know on Solaris 9, if you have gnome installed, you can just change the type of session you want from a drop down menu in the display manager login screen. Solaris 10 and 11 (open solaris) use gnome (the "java" desktop) as the default desktop.
