Just for kicks I decided to try the Java Desktop Environment option from the login manager...it appears this is Sun's name for Gnome with some Java branding. Go figure. It's an easy fix at least :P Thanks for the replies though.

I'm fairly sure they are using Xdm (graphical login) so you need to
use either .Xclients (needs to be chmod a+x) or .xsession instead of
.xinitrc .  Of course, `man xdm` says nothing useful :-(  If that doesn't
work, you could always just mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask them :-)
