Couple of other things:
does hostname lookup work? try

host www.google.com

it should report a list of ip addresses associated with the hostname

also, try a different nameserver like OpenDNS's:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Neither will really fix the problem, but may help you narrow it down
and figure out what to google for.
