I've been using a program called rsnapshot (www.rsnapshot.org) to do timed, versioned backups with rsync and hard links. My understanding is that it's similar to dirvish but simpler. It's worked well for me, so you may find it worth looking into.

E.g. dirvish:

which i found a pain to setup (in fact, still haven't).
I've been using flyback lately, http://code.google.com/p/flyback/
based on the ideas behind mac's new backup scheme. Would
be fun to discuss these, but I found there's flaws in all
of these. You just have to pick something that suits you
best.

Been some talk of rsync lately. Has anyone played with Unison?

Great replacement for rsync because it will go both ways.
