So does it only work via the Exchange connector?

Simpler is definitely better; however, it looks gmail will only fetch
via POP3. Part of the problem here is that this server is (apparently)
not accessible via POP3. Maybe I'm missing something, since I scarcely
use my gmail account and have never done anything involving exchange.
Thanks,
Nick

Nick,
I think it's wonderfully thoughtful of you to be willing to go to the
trouble for your friend (seriously)!
I think I have an easier solution though... have her set up a Gmail
account, once in Gmail, click on SETTINGS at the top of the screen and
then click on the ACCOUNTS tab. About half way down is GET MAIL FROM
OTHER ACCOUNTS. Have her fill in the login info for her Exchange account.
THEN... have her click on the FORWARDING and POP/IMAP tab and enable
retrieving mail from Gmail via pop (there are also instructions for
setting up the client).
Shouldn't take her more than about 10-15 minutes from start to finish,
including signing up for the Gmail account.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Subject: [UM-LINUX] Exchange Man in the Middle
I have a bit of a weird question. A friend has an account on an MS
exchange server. She wants to get her mail using a smartphone which,
coincidentally, does not play well with the server*, and the server will
not allow her for forward mail to another account. Would it be
technically possible (setting aside for a moment whether it's a good
idea) for me to use (cheap or, preferably, free) software on a linux box
to connect to the server (given the appropriate login info), get the
mail, and then make it available for her (via, say, POP3 or IMAP)? I
thought evolution (and perhaps some other linux clients) could connect
and get mail from an exchange server, but I have no idea if there's
software to allow this sort of man in the middle function. Is there
some other obvious solution?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Nick
* It doesn't play well in the sense that her phone doesn't support
certain characters in the login name which her login requires in this
case, and apparently they refuse to simply change her login name.
