I've been experiencing this with the umd-secure-fast network on my
MacBook since I got it about a month ago; it reports that the wireless
card firmware version is "Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.19)". Before
getting the MacBook I had an Asus laptop with an Intel Pro Wireless
2915 card, which ran many versions of Ubuntu and NetworkManager over
the course of a couple years, and I never had disconnection problems
with that setup. So: Maybe it's related to the Broadcom chipset?

I also have the Broadcom BCM43xx chipset and likewise experienced
several disconnects per day in the physics building.
To reconnect required removing and reloading the kernel module:
#!/bin/bash
/sbin/rmmod b43.ko
/sbin/modprobe b43
Eventually I switched to the ethernet.
