We're primarily a Linux shop, but do Windows installs on occasion. Granted these are all rack mounted servers; sounds like you're dealing with desktops -- probably impractical in your case. With serial console, we can access our Linux boxes remotely, and even Windows boxes using EMS and SAC (bleh). It's really useful when someone borks their networking or needs a BIOS setting adjusted.
It works really well for us.
