How about telling them that changing the visual direction of any arrow is a no-no(*) and if you transform text, you need to ensure that it stays as intended?
Unless you happen to know what logical direction (e.g. source ---> output) an arrow has, so you can swap it when you reorder the terms.
Math or chemistry would be contexts where arrows have logical directions, but you can't retroactively switch to new characters, because then you'd mess up any search and comparison.
And you'd never be sure that someone used the "correct" arrow for the purpose, leaving you no better off than before.
