I've noticed some strange things with plane 1 characters:

* When I make a UTF-8 document and open it in Internet Explorer 5.5 under
Windows 98, each letter is displayed as *two* square boxes. These square
boxes do *not* represent the corresponding surrogate pairs. Each letter is 4
bytes long.

* When I make a HTML document and use the HTML codes (&#xXXXXX;), each
letter is displayed as *one* square box. Each letter is 9 bytes long.

* When I make a UTF-8 document and convert the *surrogate pairs* into UTF-8
as two different letters, each letter is displayed as *one* square box. Each
letter is now 6 bytes long.

I have no font for displaying plane 1 characters, so it's not strange that
all is displayed as square boxes. My question is: Would these letters be
displayed properly in any of the above cases *if* I manage to find any font
that supports plane 1?

Stefan
