Whilst not the nicest of mechanisms, it turns out that Emacs does have a 'standard' command auto-composition-mode which will toggle automatic clustering. If one disables automatic clustering, one can then step through the clusters character by character. This is the sort of thing Hariraama has been asking for on the Indic list, though he would like the capability for Microsoft Word. Richard.
