Just a clarification on the proposed syntax: Clint, do you mean
                var:type::default
as an alternative to Steve's
                var:type=default?

Also, whichever form is eventually adopted, I assume the new syntax will allow
you to write the procedure call
                p( , , ,a, ,b)
as
                p(x=a, z=b)

Correct? That would be an improvement in itself.

It appears there is a good amount of support for Steve's proposal. Many have not even noticed defaulting and type coercion syntax yet, so it is not "too late" to fix things as Steve has feared.

In comparing var:type:default versus var:type=default, I can say
that to the best of my recollection, I actually did consider
var:type=default and my main reservation about it was using =
for yet another purpose. The colon seemed less overloaded.

But, I pretty much agree that the ambiguity of var:foo is probably
a bad thing, and am willing to consider var:type=default. Let's
see, do I have any alternatives besides Steve's alternate syntax
that everyone seemed repulsed by? :-) ...

Well, we could have var:type, var:type:default, and var::default.
Compared with var:type, var:type=default, and var=default, I don't
see a huge difference, the main question is how heavily you weigh
my "bad to overload =" rationale. I'd appreciate if Steve and
some of y'all comment on this. Maybe there is a flaw in my alternative
to Steve's fix, or maybe Steve's fix is just more attractive!
