I like var::default.  There's a little bit of precedent with p(,,x) and
[,,x] for omitted elements.  Also, '=' is, of course, numeric equality, not
assignment or initialization (but var:type:=default would be pretty ugly).

I can't quite put my finger on the problem but what I want to say is that
var:type=default has "bad rhythm".  (Perl has the rhythm of a marching band
falling down two sets of bleachers.)
