First, thanks to everyone who responded. I am happy to see reports contradicting mine!
I haven't figured out the exact cause of the discrepancy yet, but one item of information is that my Icon compiler is the Solaris binary from the University of Arizona's Icon 9.4.1. I believe that Gregg Townsend uses gcc 2.95.3 to make his distributions.
On the other hand, my Unicon compiler was made by me using gcc 3.3.1. My impression is that gcc 3.x is a better compiler than gcc 2.9.x. At least the compilation speed is much better. But could gcc 3.x be making some sub-optimal :-) optimizations?
How does everybody else build their Unicon's?
