Watching the dotnet discussion, just wondering does anyone have any stats on how many Unicon users are using the M$ platform as opposed to open source OS's (linux, freebsd, netbsd, etc).
If you want the language to survive, the stat you really want to compare is the potential marketshare of Microsoft platform developers as opposed to open source developers.
Seems to me that someone made the I also have a disdain for lending support in anyway to one of the largest Unsupporters, of the Free (as in Stallman free) Gnu/Linux platform that I have used since '96.
Yet Icon itself was "Free as in Free" (aka public domain), which Stallman also disdains.
I just think that open source should support open source projects FIRST, then help out poor ol' M$ when that is done.
I don't get it. How does porting Unicon to .Net help Microsoft? I see how it exposes the language to far more developers, but that helps Unicon, not Microsoft. I see how Unicon supporters who develop for the Microsoft platform to make a living are benefited, but again, that helps Unicon, not Microsoft.
Unicon/Icon are irrelevant to Microsoft; after all, they certainly have the talent to port it themselves if they so wished (and no restrictions whatsoever if they should choose to port Icon). All this bigotry does is ensure that Unicon is irrelevant to the .Net developer community as well.
What really saddens me is the sheer amount of negative energy this community espouses towards Microsoft. This certainly isn't the Icon community of my youth. It used to be a place that encouraged, not discouraged, as many platforms as possible. Not anymore.
