At the risk of heresy, but hoping for thoughtful discussion:

Philadelphia's been trying to fix its schools for a long time and
failing. Near as I can tell, some of the problem is money, some of the
problem is political, and some of the problem is cultural (parents who
don't provide a proper environment for their kids to learn).

While I'm not in favor generally for state control, why do we
necessarily believe the state is going to do worse? We've done a
pretty miserable job ourselves.

Note, for example, that the state took oversight of our finances a few
years back, and it was just the kick we needed to get our own house in
order.
