I found out from calling Governor Schweiker's office ( 717-787-2500) that
you can also email him:

On good authority, I heard that Benno Schmid, who runs Edison, was a
disaster as head of Yale, very insenstivie and inefficient, disliked
bymost, did not get good results etc. not a good sign for Edison's
success in Philadelphia;
I think that the Gov. could give Edison or some other group, a few
schools in one area, or selected, just say 10, to see what they do in
competition with the public system, which has made some noticeable
improvements lately...
And, based on our experience at the Lea K-8 school, the primary
influence on the school is the Principal, his or her vision, smarts,
executive ability, care of the children, committment, etc..... (and of
course, and without doubt, the quality of the teachers)... We should ask
forbetter training for teachers in 2001, including a year of some
science, be it physics for poets, bio 1, chem 1, astronomy for English
majors, or environmental studies, etc.... or experimental psychology....
but some actual science experience with labs... this is not 1800!! The
children are more science oriented than many teachers...
so, if you are concerned, please take these two easy ways to tell
the Governor what you think.
NOTE: both Philadelphias United to Support Public Schools and
PCCY think there should be a clear NO to Edison Schools, period, citing
failtures elsewhere, fudging of data, losing money and other cities that
voted to get rid of them...
