Mr. Goldstein,

Thanks for the reply. I think I would be a lot happier with the whole situation if UCD did nothing else but help to make sure the trash cans were kept from overflowing.

Well, that and I still think that the ambassdors should refrain from playing basketball in uniform.

I am very sorry that you feel this way.  I hear you about the trash and it's for that very reason that we need people like you to support the fundraiser.  The City can only afford to collect the trash one day per week (usually Tuesdays) and we (through the fundraiser) have been able to add an additional day per week (usually thursdays or fridays).  The Dept. of REC. will also add their full-time seasonal maintenance person to the park next week.  That will help tremendously with trash in the Park.  Did you know that Clark Park is the most actively permitted park in the REC. park system?  It gets a lot of use!  You should also know that UCD and FOCP are not enforcement agencies (dogs off their leashes).  You, as a citizen and Park user, can help to correct things you do not like by making your voice heard in City Council and with the Police.  All we can do is try to improve the overall condition of the park, which we have for five straight years through the generosity of hundreds of people that live in University City as well as several foundations and corporations.  People contribute as little as $5 and as much as $20,000 each year because the Park is free and available to everyone.  Finally I can tell you that you are wrong about UCD.  There's not a person on my staff that doesn't care about the needs of individuals in the community.  The needs of individuals in this community are front and center for this organization and are the very reason we get up and come to work.  We are tremendously proud of what we do and what we have accomplished.

I hope you will support the fundraiser for the good it has done for the Park, if for no other reason.

Eric.

Subject: Boycott: Party for the Park

I will not support the FoCP because I don’t think they reflect the needs of the park. Tony West speaks of the ‘urgent’ need for the community to come out and support the event. What he really means to say is the liberal white elite who has the money to support the event.

Tony also speaks of expanded maintenance – what about regular maintenance? I was walking through Clark Park this morning and noticed that there were trash cans overflowing with refuse left over from this weekend. This is the fourth week now that the park has been strewn with trash left over from the weekend.

Why support organizations that can’t even collect weekend trash on the weekend, or at least the first thing on Monday?

I also walked past the dog bowl and saw the free range doggies let off-leash by their owners. What happened to the dog park?

I don’t support UCD because I don’t think they really care about the needs of individuals in the neighborhood. I’m tired of watching the UCD ambassadors ‘hanging out’ at Sunoco, leering at the young women walking around the Penn Campus, and playing basketball in the park.

Boycott the Party for the Park. Demand better service  - don’t reward bad service and bad behavior.

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE PARK,

Only seven days remain before the 5th Annual Clark Park “Party for the Park” on Thursday, May 6th from 5:30 to 8pm. It's urgent that the whole community come out to support this event, which is the *only source* for the expanded maintenance program that keeps Clark Park an adornment to our community! If we don't raise the money, the park will start to deteriorate at once. It's that simple.

This year’s theme, “Into the Enchanted Woods,” will feature great food and cocktails, music by Jay Ansill, prizes for best costume, and a Silent Auction.

The expanded Silent Auction features: gift certificates to restaurants including Rx, White Dog Cafe, Davio’s, and Manayunk Brewing Company; overnight packages for local hotels and B&Bs; great seats at your favorite Philadelphia professional sports venues and the Army/Navy game; and items from Ben & Jerry’s, The Philadelphia Zoo, Lagos, Computer Connection, Amtrak, the Bridge Cinema de lux, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and many more!

Remember that 100% of your tax-deductible contribution goes directly to landscape maintenance in Clark Park including trash removal, mowing grass, weeding planting beds, edging walkways, fertilizing, and leaf clean-ups. Please consider buying tickets or making a contribution to the Party for the Park this year! Even if you cannot attend the "Party,' you can still make a donation and do your part, just by contacting UCD as indicated below.

Once again, the Drumcliff Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar all ticket sales, up to $20,000.  Please help maximize this match!

Tickets are $75 for individuals, $60 for members of Friends of Clark Park, and $60 for corporations/institutions (with a minimum of 8 tickets).

Tickets can be purchased and contributions can be made specifically for the maintenance fund by calling UCD at 215.243.0555 or online with credit card at:
