You were close. The theatre at 43rd and Walnut St. was the Commodore. We used to attend it regularly.

btw, that mosque on walnut used to be an old movie theater (conveniently built on a slope), the cunningham(?) theater. and before it was a mosque it was some kind of christian place of worship. since it's been a mosque they've dug out the slope inside, along with removing all signs of the former tenants, including my favorite, a little window jawn that said JESUS SAVES in that south philly rowhouse lettering. but you can still make out the 'CT' in the original stonework near the top of the building...

why is it theaters become churches and churches become theaters?

(also, anyone know why that church on 40th street is for sale? the one near the mcdonalds? st. josephs?)
