Don't you have to wonder how these things are disappearing? Picked up to be sold as scrap metal? If so, it's pretty dangerous. We shouldn't just wait around till the Water Dept. shows up. I sent John Fenton at UCD an email at 11:09 this morning, Saturday, about them. Now remember, it's Saturday, and the guy doesn't work 24/7, and I emailed a UCD address, not a home one. He phoned me at 11:35 to get the exact locations, and told me that he missed work yesterday because his young daughter fell on her head and needed stitches. I checked old emails, found the two exact locations above, and called John back at 11:43. He called the Water Dept and called me back at 11:52. The Water Dept. told him that they will try to squeeze these replacements in today, Saturday; if not, they will do them on Sunday morning. Maybe it would NOT have worked to call UCD yesterday when John wasn't there - he's the guy who has developed the contact links. I understand that some folks on this list don't see John's access, the UCD's access, to city services as a good thing. EVERYBODY should get fast, reliable service from the Water Dept. and every other city department. I wish we could all count on the same response John gets. But let's face it, none of us have gone to the trouble to network the way he has, to establish the credibility and connections he has. We don't know who to call in emergencies, on Saturdays, after hours, to get our requests across immediately and urgently. John does; it's his job. So I'm going to agree with Al Krigman here: when there's an emergency, do what needs to be done to get it resolved! If that means calling John Fenton at the UCD, do it! Don't be annoyed that he can resolve it for you, and therefore use the slow route instead, and put neighbors in jeopardy! Just call the UCD!
