Linda,

I recently went through the process of getting estimates for a variety of
masonry work, including bread-and-butter style repointing and coating the
brickwork with a masonry-waterproofing compound. Of the masons I met with, the
company that seemed the most knowledgable regarding the kind of historic
brickwork found in this neighborhood was Restoration Masonry in Bensalem. (I
just signed the contract yesterday, so I can't report on their work habits and
results yet...)

Among other things, they were the only contractors that:
1) Asked if the property was already historically certified or had other
documentation regarding provenance, construction techniques, etc.
2) Clearly understood that the composition and porosity of both bricks and
mortar has radically changed since the time that the house was built, and that
a failure to accurately match the original composition could lead to long-term
damage due to humidity-based moisture buildup behind "repaired" areas. [This,
by the way, is the reason that coating old-style brickwork with stucco or
similar surfaces can lead to disaster in the future.]

You can reach them at 215-633-6821.

Regards,
Dave Axler
