I share the concerns about the vision for a hotel at 40th and Pine. But we can be almost guaranteed that the power brokers of SHCA and the district are drafting an absolute refusal for this hotel as I write.
Some years ago The Spruce Hill Civic Association tried to push an historic designation over this neighborhood. Of course, this would have had disastrous effects upon our most vulnerable neighbors with almost no benefit. But preserving the historical character was being asserted whatever the human costs. Of course, we havent seen our neighbors ripping off their porches to make extra millions as we were led to believe. Like me, most of our neighbors recognize the value of the neighborhood architecture but our neighbors could use help with the difficult and risky business of contracting for home repairs. But forget about that terrible plan for a historic designation. Here is the important point. If the SHCA civic association leaders do not immediately say no to the beginning of the corporate demolition of the neighborhood with this hotel, they would prove themselves to be tremendous hypocrites!!! Weve read over and over that the leaders of SHCA are the voice of the community. Their role in Penns agenda has been firmly established too. As an optimist, I feel quite confident that the SHCA statement is probably in its second or third draft stages. It will certainly show that there is unanimous opposition to destroying the historical character of this neighborhood and unanimous opposition to this hotel. Any other possibility would suggest such incredible hypocrisy by the community that it would be almost inconceivable!!! It would suggest that forced gentrification and corporatization were always the goals of our community. That cant possibly be true. I cant wait to read the SHCA letter, which tells them where to stick their 10-story hotel! I hope Im there so I can watch the corporate developers throw a hissy fit. Power to the people; power to the community! Thank the Gods for SHCA!!!! Sincerely, Glenn Moyer,a strong advocate for the study of history, historical preservation, and community autonomy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam?
