This Op-Ed makes a reference to our very own UofP. In the
transformation of our society, this demand for free labor preying upon
the hopes of college students comes from the same propaganda messaging
as the calls for "volunteerism" to solve societies problems.

Political leaders preach at the people that issues, like the poor high
school graduation rate, can only be solved through volunteerism and
brutality. They then try to funnel money to churches and private
non-profit industries, while proclaiming that social work, addiction tx,
etc. should be done by volunteers. A few people make a lot of money and
power in this system, while societies problems fester.
I think people are clinging to the beliefs which place universities
above the "dog eat dog" culture- That their powerbrokers are above
reproach and work for the betterment of society instead of money and
power. They are actually part of the same corporate elite that rules
us, with the same values and lies. (I worked in the field of behavioral
health care research for over a decade. I only then realized that
research money sent to universities is prioritized by profitability and
not the betterment of society.)
