Yea, whenever I hear "school choice" it's always bad news. I think most parents want good public schools in their neighborhoods. They don't want to move to an upscale neighborhood, nor do they want to go to a marketplace. It's rather ridiculous for thinking people, but the 1% brainwashes us about the sacredness of the marketplace and that it's the only thing Americans care about.

Just like with private health insurance, the money for the high CEO profits and marketing budgets for charters require cuts somewhere else. I thought that Roebuck supported charter and cyber schools! I'm glad I got that wrong because I'd rather see a politician stand for what is right even if he loses some battles. The charter movement is part of the movement to destroy public education just like vouchers, as you point out!

They try to call them reformed "public schools" but they aren't. They are only public so that public funds can be sent to them. That's why parks are still called public. Control is privatized and there is no transparency or accountability in the back room deals but the public pays!

We need real investment in all schools because we know that we could improve outcomes if we had the same resources, class sizes, teacher salaries, etc. as wealthy suburban schools. But the 1% wants charters to serve as pre-prison and pre-military centers. The lucky ones go to the military and the rest go directly to jail.

Well, this certainly says a great deal about the ignorance of the
candidates challenging Roebuck and Louise Williams.

Why would they push for primarily African-American children to be put into
re-sgregated schools, (City Charters around the country are overwhelmingly
Black), where the school culture is primarily discipline and obedience?
Charter schools strip finds from public schools and receive corporate
moines. Yet, not a single one I have seen provides things like
distance-learning labs, digital video studios, robotics labs, iPads for
each student, laptops for each student, SMART boards and SMART tables;
something that is the pretty much the norm in suburban PUBLIC schools from
K on up. Heck, there are public schools in the city that have many of
these items.

These are the things needed to make our children competitive with their
suburban counterparts, but they are primarily being taught in charters to
walk in the halls quietly and disciplined harshly for any hint of violent
behavior, no mater how small, and jettisoned if they don't comply.

Public schools used to be able to do THAT, but no longer; only charter
schools.

Apparently, a new flier is being used in the Muhammad/Roebuck campaign.
Has anyone seen it?

It looks like the Citizens United ruling and money is part of our local
campaign. Apparently, the main corporate issue is vouchers or charter
schools. I wish we had candidates who championed restoring real public
education. But I know they wouldn't be allowed on the ballot.

I would say Muhammad should immediately and publicly condemn these
fliers, or her criticism of the candidates forum loses credibility.
People who stand on principles need to be consistent!
