Not knowing the details of your linux installation, I would say try
doing it the same way and see if it works. To run 6.5 you'll need MySQL
4.1.x or later, but maybe you already have that.

build-perl-modules.pl does what the name implies: it's a perl script
that builds some of the necessary perl modules for your architecture
(PowerPC processor). That's because SD doesn't compile binaries for
oddball -- sorry, 'unsupported' -- platforms like Kuro HGs <g>. But the
perl script does it. I'm surprised that you don't need to run it, but if
it works for you, that's great. If you need to run it, slimserver
usually gives you an error message telling you so when you try to start
it.

While your start/kill routine may work fine, let me know if you'd like
a script that enables basic start/stop/restart operation. I have one
based on those in the Gentoo instructions that you might find useful.
