Well Pat, that got it. I think I was not running the command to start as root, ie., I was not putting the "sudo" in front of it. With that SqueezeCenter is running.
One last question. In windows the plugins go in a directory beneath Squeezecenter. I'm not sure where they go in Linux, in this case Ubuntu. Is it the same directory as SqueezeCenter itself?
