I upgraded Perl because the default CC Perl 5.8.5 install was giving me the same type of error.
After reading this page http://www.ulverston.myzen.co.uk/mini-itx/pages/perl.htm I thought I'd give it a shot. Note that the upgrade to Perl 5.8.9 did not break anything else. But what you suggest (wrong search path) sounds like it could be the problem. I'll investigate that further and post back on the results if any.
