Linux is a great alternative to windows. Not only does it cost less
(free) but it runs on much slower and older hardware just fine. There
are less hardware drivers available for Linux  but %95 of modern PC
hardware will work with Linux. If you can get something like a Dell
OptiPlex that uses very standard hardware you will have no problems.

VortexBox install everything for you so you should never need to go to
command line unless you need modify you system to suit your
needs.VortexBox should work for most people right after install.

That being said it's not a bad idea to learn a little command line in
case you need to resolve a problem. This is true for windows as well.
