Why don't you upgrade to 9.04? download a live Cd and try it. If it works then upgrade. You might have to do a multi stage upgrade. If you don't like upgrading then always use a longterm support version. 7.04 is no longer supported so all your efforts trying to put new software on the old operating system will only take you out of the experiences of the experts as they won't be using 7.04 and you will only be relying on their memory.
