I'm runing a 2T software raid for 3 or 4 years now, but not as a backup system, it is a fileserver setup. The problem with RAID as backup is that if the raid fails for whatever reason (mobo or controller or whatever) then ALL your data will be lost, you will not be able to recover it. RAID will protect you against a disk failure (single or multiple, depends on the RAID type). Instead, I backup to a couple of 2TB standalone drives. More on why raid is not a backup here http://administratosphere.wordpress.com/2009/01/27/raid-is-not-a-backup/ There was a time when non ext file systems were recommended for large media files (among other things it took forever to delete a file). I believe modern ext4 and ext3 is adequate for large files and the size of your RAID. I'm runing ext3 on older version of Fedora (version 6) and I did not experience any issues. Some files are in a 6-7 GB range.
