I'm runing a 2T software raid for 3 or 4 years now, but not as a backup
system, it is a fileserver setup. The problem with RAID as backup is
that if the raid fails for whatever reason (mobo or controller or
whatever) then ALL your data will be lost, you will not be able to
recover it. RAID will protect you against a disk failure (single or
multiple, depends on the RAID type). Instead, I backup to a couple of
2TB standalone drives.

There was a time when non ext file systems were recommended for large
media files (among other things it took forever to delete a file). I
believe modern ext4 and ext3 is adequate for large files and the size
of your RAID. I'm runing ext3 on older version of Fedora (version 6)
and I did not experience any issues. Some files are in a 6-7 GB range.
