RAID is just one aspect of a "good" storage approach, yes.

Basically given a limited budget and 3 disks, I'd sacrifice the space
of 1 disk for redundancy every time.  I think with storage prices
coming down all the time RAID continues to get attractive, even for
home users.

RAID isn't a replacement for backup, but RAID is still always better
then no RAID (except for JBOD/RAID0).
