It's intended to give the same data as aplay -L, but in a more compact
format.  I felt this was more useful than aplay -l.  I believe the fact
that you don't see very much on touch is a feature of the device drivers
on touch.  On a other linux machines it give more useful outputs from my
perspective - i.e. it gives useful names of cards which can be used with
the -o option.
